Machine prefixes are used to create names for virtual machines provisioned through vRealize Automation. A machine prefix is required when defining a machine component in the blueprint design canvas. Machine prefixes are shared across all tenants. In this post we will see on How to configure machine prefix in vRealize Automation.
You should assign a default machine prefix to every business group that you expect to need infrastructure resources. Every blueprint must have a machine prefix or use the group default prefix. Only the machine prefixes that are applicable to the current tenant are exposed with authoring a blueprint or editing a business group.
A prefix is a base name to be followed by a counter of a specified number of digits. When the digits are all used, vRealize Automation rolls back to the first number. Fabric administrators are responsible for managing machine prefixes.
So let’s see How to configure machine prefix in vRealize Automation:
Login using the Fabric Administrator.
Go to Infrastructure tab.
Expand administration section in navigator pane.
Select Machine Prefixes.
Click on Green Plus icon to create machine prefix.
Provide the name for machine prefix, choose Tenant, Number of digits & Next number for machine prefix.
You can use only the case-insensitive ASCII letters a through z, the digits 0 through 9, and the hyphen (-).
Click on Save icon to save the machine prefix.
You can see that machine prefix is created & the details of the machine prefix.
That’s it, Using this way you can easily create machine prefix for the virtual machines so that when vRA will provision the virtual machines it will use the naming & prefix configured here.
By seeing at the virtual machine names in vCenter you can easily identify that the virtual machine is provisioned using vRA.
