Windows Server core comes as an only command line operating system. So for any functionality you want to perform on the server core you must know the command line. In this post we will see on How to Rename Windows Server core.
Windows Server core comes with the command line only so either you can use command line or powershell to perform operations in server core. For startup configuration like rename , network setup , domain join etc there is one very useful functionality available which is called “sconfig”.
We will use the same functionality to show you how you can easily rename windows server core using sconfig.
Login to your Windows Server core first.
You will get the command prompt.
Type “sconfig” & press Enter.
You will see server configuration wizard is opened. Where you can perform some basic operations.
Now we want to rename server core.
You can provide number 2 for Computer Name & press Enter.
Provide the name which you want to set for your windows server core.
Server rename requires restart of server.
So you will get the restart prompt.
You can either restart now or later.
Click on Yes to restart the server.
Now after restart you can login to the server.
Type the “hostname” command to check the server name.
As you can see that server name is changed successfully.
That’s it, Using this way you can easily rename windows server core in your environment. sconfig is the simple command line functionality which allows you to do some first setup operations with your server. So that after installing windows server core you can setup it up easily.
Note: In this post we have used Windows Server 2019 core edition.
